i think the Supreme Courts interpretations of free speech have become more libertarian over time. For example, free speech on LGBT matters would have been strictly prohibited a century ago.

Free speech has definitely changed over time, examples of this is racism, explicit words, and hate speech getting censored or illegal. They change interpretations because everyone keeps saying things that get put into a good or bad category and they try to keep censorship under control.
