5-(-4)=9

when you multiply a negative and a negative, you get a positive. Two signs may not be next to each other, so you must multiply the two signs nearest to each other which is this area -(- , in this case you get a positive. That would turn the problem from 5-(-4) into 5+4 hitch equals 9!
