The main energy-coupling compound in biochemical reactions that allows thermodynamically unfavorable processes to become favorable is ATP, or Adenosine triphosphate. ATP hydrolysis has a large, negative, free-energy change, due to electrostatic repulsion, stabilization by extra resonance forms, stabilization by ionization, and stabilization by solvation.
