how did the study of fossils help support darwin's ideas about evolution?

Here again lol your answer is,

Fossils contain a "snapshot" of what animals of that age lookeed like and it went from there. Elder fossils are found much lower down in soil so through digging down you could compare the different fossils and see if they are from the same animal at different periods of evolution.
