Kinetic energy is energy in motion and potential energy is energy that is stored.

Potential energy is stored energy in the object whereas kinetic energy is energy of motion or speed.

In the image I have attached, take a look at the bowling ball. AT the top of the hill, it has stored energy. You can't see it, but it's there. As the bowling ball moves down, that potential energy turns to kinetic energy.
