Before a sale an item’s price was $32, after the sale the discount price becomes $27.20. What was the percent of the sale discount?

Difference = $32 - $27.20
                 = $4.80
% discount = $4.80 / $32 x 100%
                  = 15%

To find percentages in increase, one must use division as percentages in decrease are found using multiplication.
27.2÷x=32
27.2=32x
27.2÷32=x
.85=x
The solution returned is not representative of the amount of discount, but the amount of remaining price. To discover the discount amount, the percentage must be inverted.
100-85=15
15% discount.
