The name given to the loose organization of people dedicated to helping escaped slaves get to free territory was the Underground Railroad. During the mid 19th century, this network of secret routes and safe houses was created so as to help slaves who have escaped from their owners get to the North where slavery was abolished. Because at the time, it was still legal in the South of America.
